Dare I ask your opinion of Bethke's latest video? Y'know, the one on Sex and Marriage and so forth? Or am I better off just assuming that you have serious issues with it, and leave it at that? — Asked by nexus4change

Well, you’re right to assume that I have serious issues with it. In fact, I liked this video much less than the Religion one he did, probably because sex and gender roles and so forth are sensitive issues for me.

I’ll just point out a few of the problems that I noticed when I watched the video.

In the beginning, he presents chick flicks and Disney movies as being some particularly egregious factor in our culture’s unhealthy view of marriage. What he leaves unsaid but I think is implied is that women are the primary viewers of those kinds of movies. Therefore he’s putting a lot of blame for the high divorce rate and the other social ills he mentioned in the video onto women, an oversimplification that I find unhelpful.

There were some other moments that were painful, including when he calls on husbands to lead their wives ‘with grace,’ arguing that if men and women each remained in their proper roles then marriages would be healthier. This isn’t that surprising given Bethke’s background and Mars Hill connections.

The whole video is just an oversimplification of gender roles and cultural expectations and church responsibility for the state of (implied: straight) marriage in the US. I shouldn’t expect a nuanced view of issues as complicated as marriage and sex in a short spoken-word video, but the video wasn’t gracious enough to people who might disagree with the causes of and solutions to the problem.
